angst

Sep. 11th, 2006 | 01:00 am

i'm getting sick of people telling me not to think too much. what kind of half-assed remedy is that anyway? it's like a euphamism for 'shut up already'. and it's as lazy and insulting and frustrating as saying "whatever" to someone. okay fine. whatever.

it's okay, the person who should be reading this entry doesn't even know where to find it.

I have this ignoramus habit of turning to my Malaysian receptionist for any and all questions pertaining to Malaysians, even though she’s born and bred in Singapore. Do Malaysians only take hot food? How long does it take to drive to Malacca? Why do Malaysians have such big families?

Totally inexcusable.

the last kiss

i think the reason why zach and i have lasted so long is because we manage our expectations so well. my feelings for him are about as lukewarm as his feelings for his blog. sure they surged when i first caught scrubs, and when he updated nearly every week, but he's changed since garden state. he seldomly updates now. likewise, i think of visiting his blog even more sporadically. and its all good.

a violent game that could actually decrease violence

Jul. 23rd, 2006 | 11:46 am

read about this on nytimes-

september 12:

"you load it up in your browser and see a gang of terrorists wandering through a tightly packed Arab market, all drawn in a colorful cartoon style. you try to bomb them, but every explosion is so overpowered that it accidentally kills innocent bystanders. relatives are driven by grief and anger to become terrorists themselves. the more you bomb, the more terrorists you create, until the screen is overrun with them. thus the game presents its argument: bombing is no way to win the war on terror."

actually when i saw this i suddenly remembered playing Oregon Trail every day in middle school. this was probably the only time during those harrowing prepubescent days years when i traded in my upper middle class "worries" for bigger issues. like my next source of food.

* * *

so if you believe dan savage when he says that he wrote this week’s advice column in an internet-free zone, you can't help but wonder if that's why his advice is shittier than usual too. does every contemporary columnist rely completely on google and wiki to sound half as intelligent as they seem?

Yes. It’s been an exciting Sunday morning on da triple-dub.

how was YOUR weekend?

52 times a year. sometimes more, depending on what industry you're in.

i'm going to write a loop of completely fabricated, pre-meditated answers for the rest of the year so that i have more to say than 'finehowwasyours'. well, i'll use that on some days.

i hate singapore right now. i hate singaporeans. i hate conservatives who think they're liberals. i feel like i'm living in the newsroom of the Straits Times, where you either have to conform to a code of unethics or be replaced by some spineless minion who will. by the way, a tiny part of me fears that this 'offensive blog entry' will make headlines tomorrow, because apparently this is the first thing people want to read over before work.

the end. i wasn't planning to write such an angsty entry, but i feel better.

:)

context: taken from runner-up entry to vanity fair's essay contest, which asked gen-xers 'what, if anything, is on the mind's of america's youth?'

rorifdawg2: we'll never be as good as they were
mnm4dawgs69: who?
rorifdawg2: the generations before us. they were so motivated.
mnm4dawgs69: they were bored
rorifdawg2: they were inspired
mnm4dawgs69: they only had three channels, three distractions. we've got 900 with basic cable.
rorifdawg2: they really thought about the issues
mnm4dawgs69: we think about the same things, only faster
rorifdawg2: we don't take the time to process
mnm4dawgs69: we don't need to process. we have computers.
rorifdawg2: we should hire them as consultants
mnm4dawgs69: they're in the past. forget them. we've taken over.
rorifdawg2: that's so barbaric
mnm4dawgs69: digital killed the analog star, ba-by
rorifdawg2: this is a problem, you know—your inability to be serious
mnm4dawgs69: blame it on my age
rorifdawg2: they do
